Businesses question govt's commitment to Selibe Phikwe

Friday, 20 January, 2017 - 11:00

As the town of Selebi Phikwe comes to terms with the reality of life without the BCL Mine, some business owners have once again questioned government's commitment to revive the town's bartered economy.

A prominent businessman told Gabz FM News that although government officials have appealed to investors not to abandon the town, the business community has been kept in the dark about what the next course of action is.

He said they have to rely on the media for bits and pieces of information, which does not amount to much. The investor gave the economic diversification body, SPEDU, as one example where the Phikwe business community has been kept guessing about what is happening.

The coordinator of the Phikwe Economic Revitalisation project, former central bank governor, Linah Mohohlo, is also yet to set up in the town and is said to operate from Gaborone.
