Mogoditshane Police are investigating an incident in which a 29 year old woman was raped last night by her neighbour. Speaking to Gabz Fm news this morning, Mogoditshane spokesperson Albert Foda says the woman visited the accused as they are neighbours but then the incident took place. Foda says the middle aged man is currently in police custody pending investigations.

At least six of the car accidents which occurred over the festive period in Ramotswa are suspected to be due to motorists driving recklessly on a recently opened section of road which had been closed for months. Police say the accidents were not linked to drunken driving. Superintendent Sarah Gabathuse of Ramotswa police says a possible cause is gravel that has not been cleared from the road after construction work. She also cautioned drivers to be careful when taking the curve after crossing the railway line.

The Bank of Botswana says inflation stood at 7.4 percent in November and concedes that the inflation rate will remain above the 3 to 6 percent range in the short term due to unfavourable price developments. It says domestic output grew by 8.7 percent in the 12 months to June 2012, with non-mining output growing by 12 percent and mining output declining by 8 percent.

Ramotswa police have arrested a young serial rapist, aged 21, who has been terrorising old women in Ramotswa, raping them while they are on their way to the lands, or breaking into their homes at the lands to rape them and make away with their cell phones. Local police chief, Superintendent Sarah Gabathuse, said they managed to arrest the man after he had raped 13 women in the area. She says the man, is a former Kagiso Senior Secondary student, and is likely to face a long prison sentence if convicted.

Police Commissioner, Keabetswe Makgophe, has expressed concern about the involvement of the youth in crime and damage to government property in Maun. Officially opening a Safety and Security Pitso in Maun, Makgophe noted that the recent arson attacks at Maun Senior Secondary School affected innocent students. He added that the Pitso was being held at a time when the public was being robbed of their hard earned money and property by criminals.

The founding members of the 911 neighbourhood watch have been commended for their contribution to fighting crime in Maun and surrounding areas. Speaking at a dinner in honour of the neighbourhood watch members, Police Commissioner Keabetswe Makgophe says they continue to play a role in ensuring the Vision 2016 pillar of a safe and secure nation. Makgophe noted that since being formed in 2002, their partnership with the police resulted in the building of a satellite police station in Matlapaneng ward in 2007.

The Office of the President says the late Maxwell Motowane, who passed away on Saturday night, is likely to be buried in Letlhakeng on Sunday, although this has not been confirmed yet. Motowane, who was Assistant Local Government minister, was born in 1961. He became the MP for Letlhakeng West in 2009 and was in the same year appointed as the Assistant Minister of Health. He was subsequently transferred in the same position to the Ministry of Trade and Industry in 2010, before being appointed to Local Government in May 2011.

Police in Ramotswa say they are investigating the deaths of a 19 year old woman and a 21 year old man. Ramotswa Station Commander Superintendent Sarah Gabathuse says the 19 year old lady was found dead at her boyfriend’s place at the farms near Lions Park. Gabathuse says the deceased’s boyfriend told the police he had left the woman sleeping, but that the previous day they were drunk and the woman was staggering all over the place as they were walking home.

The Office of the President has confirmed that Assistant Minister for Local Government, Maxwell Motowane, passed away on Saturday night. It says that it is with sorrow that they received the news of his passing. It says the cause of the death is not yet known, though they understand that he complained of chest pains prior to his passing. The statement notes that Motowane was a true public servant and prayers and condolences go out to his family in this time of grief.

The BDP has vowed to win back the three council wards it lost to the opposition in Shoshong during the last general elections. Speaking at a political rally in Shoshong yesterday, Bokaa Ward councillor, Molefhi Mphoyakgosi urged BDP members to help make this a reality. Another councillor, Gokwalamang Noke, threw salvoes at party critics, especially opposition parties, saying all they ever do is criticize government programmes and never give alternatives.
