ILLEGAL SAND MINING ON THE RISE ALONG THAMALAKANE RIVER

Article By: Keba Rasekhutla

There have been alarming incidents of illegal mining along the Thamalakane river in Maun recently. This illicit activity jeopardizes the lives and natural flow of the river channels, particularly impacting the Shashe and Boronyane systems where these incidents frequently occur.

The chairman of North West District Council, Itumeleng Kelebetseng expressed deep concern to Gabz FM News over the situation, highlighting that illegal sand mining is predominantly carried out by foreign individuals in Maun.

Kelebetseng emphasized that Batswana are also complicit in this unlawful activity by purchasing sand from foreigners at reduced prices.

The chairman lamented that illegal mining has the potential to undermine the livelihoods of Batswana who rely on brickmaking for their income.
