Parliament has rejected a motion by Opposition Whip Caterpillar Hikuama to adopt a 26-day pay model for public school teachers, a system that would compensate them for all working days in a month, including time spent on marking, planning, and weekend duties.
Hikuama argued that teachers regularly work beyond the standard 8-hour day and deserve financial recognition for their efforts.
He accused government of neglecting educators and warned that the decision could lead to low morale and increased attrition in the profession.
The motion was defeated, with 10 MPs voting in favor, 20 against, and 2 abstaining.
