The Ministry of Child Welfare and Basic Education has issued warning to schools across the country, urging them to stop demanding extra materials, such as stationery, from students.
This follows reports of schools asking for items like photocopying reams, putting financial strain on families, especially those from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
In a statement the Ministry emphasized that it is the school’s responsibility, supported by the Ministry, to provide all necessary teaching and learning resources to students.
The warning stresses that such demands can cause unnecessary emotional distress and hardship for families already struggling financially. It further advices that in cases where schools face compromised dire straits, they should contact their local Ministry headquarters for assistance, ensuring they are not unfairly burdened.
