BOFEPUSU has condemned Choppies Botswana's planned retrenchments, accusing the retailer of betraying workers less than a year after introducing its P 4,000 minimum wage initiative.
The federation says the planned layoffs expose the wage pledge as a public relations exercise rather than a genuine commitment to employee welfare. It also criticised the company's cost-to-company wage model and questioned its compliance with minimum wage principles.
BOFEPUSU further alleged that the retrenchments may be aimed at sidestepping obligations under the Employment and Labour Relations Act and has called for stronger worker protections, social dialogue and employer accountability.
