BOTSWANA PRISONS SERVICE TO LAUNCH VIRTUAL VISITATIONS

Article By: Tumelo Mouwane The Botswana Prison Service is set to launch virtual visitations within state prisons, marking a significant technological advancement in local correctional facilities.

This initiative will allow family members to check on their incarcerated relatives through video calls, a move believed to play a crucial role in the successful rehabilitation and reintegration of offenders.

Chief Public Relations Officer for the prisons department, Oagile Kojane, announced that the Minister of Defence and Security, Kagiso Mmusi, will demonstrate how the system works at First Offenders and Gaborone Boys prisons today.

This development is part of an overhaul initiated by former commissioner Dinah Marathe during her tenure last year.

Among the envisioned improvements are the introduction of a prison intelligence gathering division aimed at combating the use of contraband, such as cellphones and drugs, by inmates.
