Botswana’s tourism industry is facing mounting pressure, as government delays proposed fee increases amid industry pushback and funding constraints begin to affect international visibility.

The Ministry of Environment and Tourism has postponed new tourism and park fees by two years. Minister Wynter Mmolotsi says the planned increases will be reviewed with stakeholders before submission to the Ministry of Finance.

The move follows concerns from the Hospitality and Tourism Association of Botswana (HATAB), which warned that sudden increases could disrupt a sector that relies on bookings made up to two years in advance. The association has proposed a phased approach to protect existing business and maintain market stability.

Meanwhile, the Botswana Guides Association (BOGA) is preparing legal action to block the fees, citing lack of consultation. Chairperson Kenson Kgaga says operators risk absorbing costs or losing clients, particularly in the mobile safari segment.

At the same time, government has confirmed Botswana will not attend this year’s Africa’s Travel Indaba due to financial constraints. The Botswana Tourism Organisation absence from the key Durban event has raised concerns about reduced global visibility.

The developments highlight growing tension between policy changes and industry stability, as tourism remains a key driver of jobs, investment, and foreign exchange earnings in Botswana.
