UDC MONITORING OF VOTER REGISTRATION RESTRICTED

Article By: Tebogo Mokoto

The Court of Appeal (CoA) has ruled in favour of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), restricting the opposition Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC)'s request to monitor the Voter Registration Process.

Last week the full bench, led by Court president Justice Tebogo Tau, heard arguments from both parties.

The appeals court yesterday set aside Justice Gaopalelwe Ketlogetswe's November 10th interim order that allowed the UDC monitoring request and ordered that the UDC not be permitted to deploy party agents for on-site observation or record personal information of registrants.

The IEC, which had argued that such actions could compromise data privacy and election fairness, has welcomed the ruling.
