Botswana Mine Workers Union has urged the government to cut bureaucratic red tape and allow easier access to cabinet ministers.
Speaking during May Day commemorations at the Old Francistown Stadium, BMWU President Joseph Tsimako said government officials have gone back on their promises and called for a “no-door policy” at government offices to promote open dialogue with workers.
The call comes amid growing frustration among workers, who also decried low salaries and deteriorating relations with employers. The atmosphere at the event was more somber than celebratory, as workers joined millions globally in marking International Workers’ Day under the theme “Workers’ Rights Are Human Rights.”
