The Botswana Nurses Union (BONU) has expressed support for the National Health Insurance (NHI) initiative, describing it as a step in the right direction toward equitable healthcare access. However, the union cautions that meaningful reform and investment are essential for its success.
This follows the government’s launch of a nationwide stakeholder engagement on the NHI, which aims to provide all citizens and residents with a comprehensive healthcare package covering preventive, curative, rehabilitative, and palliative services.
Speaking to Gabz FM News, BONU President Peter Baleseng said the union welcomes the initiative and the inclusive approach being taken through consultations. He noted that while the vision is commendable, the system must be backed by adequate research, improved health infrastructure, and a clear strategy to ensure service accessibility.
Baleseng warned that without addressing persistent challenges within Botswana’s healthcare system, the NHI may struggle to achieve its intended outcomes.
