Copper cable theft is on the rise in Letlhakane, with police reporting 11 cases this year alone.
The thieves target unoccupied, newly built homes. Letlhakane Police Station Commander Michael Maphephu told Gabz FM News that one case currently before the courts involves theft at a non-operational mine.
Maphephu said police have shut down scrap yards linked to stolen cables, with suspects arrested along the Dibete and Molepolole roads.
To curb the trend, officers are ramping up night patrols and increasing inspections of vehicles and scrap yards to disrupt the illegal copper trade.
