ELEPHANT PROTECTION SOCIETY WARNS HUNTING SEASON IS FUELING DEADLY HUMAN ELEPHANT CONFLICT

Article By: Solomon Tjinyeka

The Elephant Protection Society has warned that the ongoing hunting season near human settlements is increasing human–wildlife conflict, leaving some people injured and others dead following elephant attacks.

Speaking in an interview, the society’s Director, Oaitse Nawa, said hunting activities are altering animal behaviour, making elephants more aggressive and more likely to attack people.

Nawa said residents of Shoko-moka settlement are the hardest hit, as the area lies along major elephant migration corridors. He added that trophy hunting has driven elephants closer to communities, putting lives at risk.
