GHANZI DISTRICT POVERTY RATE STANDS AT 35.23%

Article By: Keba Rasekhutla

The Ghanzi District's poverty level stands at 35.23%, according to the National Multidimensional Poverty Index 2020, with a recorded dependency ratio of 98.6%.

In an exclusive interview with GABZ FM, Principal District Officer Development Dr. Boitumelo Molefane stated that poverty levels in the district have been exacerbated by the slow and low impact of social and economic empowerment programs, many of which are characterized by high costs and low returns.

She further noted that various initiatives have been implemented to combat poverty, create employment, and provide household income. However, the expected outcomes have yet to be realized, as only 51% (887 out of 1,752) of funded projects are currently operational.
