Article By: Diana Motsu

Member of Parliament for Maun West also Opposition Whip, Caterpillar Kainangura Hikuama, has introduced a motion calling on the government to adopt a 26 day pay model for teachers in Botswana’s public.

Hikuama said the proposal aims to recognize the crucial role educators play in shaping future generations and creating positive learning environments.

He emphasized that there should be a new pay model would offer teachers compensation for the long hours they dedicate to activities such as lesson planning, extracurricular activities, and sports coaching.

Hikuama’s motion addresses the growing concerns about the current system, which does not adequately reflect the demands placed on teachers, particularly those who work beyond regular hours without fair compensation.

He outlined that the proposal is a vital step towards restoring school sports and extracurricular programs, which have been disrupted due to disagreements over teachers' pay for extra duties.
