The North West District Council (NWDC) is pushing for a share of tourism royalties to support regional development.
Speaking during the NDP12 District leadership consultations in Maun recently, NWDC Chairman Itumeleng Kelebetseng appealed to the Minister for State President, Moeti Mohwasa, for the council to receive direct benefits from tourism revenue.
Kelebetseng highlighted that the council previously received a portion of tourism royalties until the arrangement ended in 2009. At its peak, the council collected up to P10 million annually.
Kelebetseng noted that reinstating this funding will help address pressing issues, such as human-wildlife conflict, and enable critical infrastructure upgrades, including the Shorobe–Mababe road, a key route for tourism that remains underdeveloped.
