Botswana has recorded a 2% decrease in road traffic accident fatalities between 2022 and 2023. This was revealed by Acting Commissioner of Police Phemelo Ramakorwane who said despite the progress, the number of deaths on the roads remains concerning. Road fatalities remain high, with 396 deaths recorded in 2023, down from 404.
Meanwhile, Botswana police are facing an uptick in certain serious crimes, even as overall crime rates show a slight decrease. Ramakorwane, citing statistics, revealed a concerning rise in murders, stock theft, and motor vehicle thefts during a senior police officers conference in Gaborone. He said while general crime has decreased by 8% compared to the same period last year, specific areas are causing alarm.
