As Botswana joins the international community in marking World Press Freedom Day today, media professionals across the country are taking time to reflect on the state of press freedom, both locally and globally, in the face of mounting challenges.
This year’s global theme, “A Press for the Planet: Journalism in the Face of the Environmental Crisis,” highlights not only the urgent need for environmental reporting but also the growing influence of emerging technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI) on journalism.
Speaking to Gabz FM News ahead of the commemoration, veteran journalist Pamela Dube encouraged local journalists to adapt to AI, viewing it as a tool to enhance rather than undermine their work.
She said the day serves as a reminder of the critical role of a free and independent press in strengthening democracy, especially as new technologies reshape how news is gathered and disseminated.
