Residents of Shashe-Sephuthe, just outside Maun, are calling on authorities to clamp down on illegal sand mining along the Shashe River.
Chairperson of the Village Development Committee, Bahentse Rena, says the practice has caused severe environmental damage, destroyed the river’s biodiversity and left behind deep pits that endanger both people and livestock.
Rena says despite several reports to the police, no meaningful action has been taken. She alleges that both locals and foreign nationals, particularly some Zimbabweans, are involved in the illegal activity.
The residents are appealing for urgent government intervention before the damage becomes irreversible.
