Botswana’s push for a sustainable energy future is gaining ground through financial partnerships, not just policy.
Speaking at the recent collaboration between Stanbic Bank Botswana and GIZ, Stanbic’s Head of Business and Commercial Banking Lesego Osman, highlights this shift’s importance in funding energy projects and providing businesses with essential financing and technical support.

According to German Ambassador to Botswana and SADC, Gabriela Bennemann, the Project Development Programme (PDP) is a model for future collaborations, with potential to unlock secure and inclusive energy solutions.
GIZ’s Rainer Brohm pointed out that access to finance remains a barrier, with high upfront costs and perceived risks hindering progress. The partnership has identified 40 projects, totaling 2.9 MW of potential generation. However, scaling this success remains a challenge, as limited access could prevent businesses from fully embracing clean energy.
