UB PROFESSOR GRANTED BAIL IN RAPE CASE.

A 56-year-old University of Botswana professor, Wilfred Malema, appeared before the Extension 2 Magistrate Court today, facing rape charges. Malema is accused of allegedly sexually assaulting a University of Botswana student on January 9, 2025.

He pleaded not guilty as the charge was read to him in court. Representing the state, Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP) Assistant Director Mmapatsi Tshimologo requested bail, arguing that Malema is not a flight risk and requires time to secure legal representation.

Magistrate Kamogelo Mmesi granted bail, setting the amount at P1000 with strict conditions, including reporting to Phakalane Police Station or the nearest station on the last Friday of every month, avoiding contact with the state witness, and securing legal repre-sentation within one month.

Malema is set to receive case documents on March 27, 2025, and will return to court for case management on April 28, 2025.
