The UDC Back Bench is opposing the government’s increase in passport fees, which takes effect on Thursday, November 1.

Under the revised schedule, an ordinary passport will cost P400, while a child’s passport will cost P200.

Official passports will cost P600 and diplomatic passports P800. Emergency travel documents will cost P100, while replacing a lost, stolen or soiled e-passport will cost P2,000.

In a statement, the UDC Back Bench called for the increase to be withdrawn, arguing that higher fees will add to the financial pressure on Batswana amid the high cost of living and unemployment.

The group says travel documents are essential for accessing opportunities, healthcare, education and trade beyond Botswana’s borders, and is calling for public consultation on any fee increases.

Meanwhile, members of the public have expressed mixed reactions to the new charges, with some describing them as excessive and accusing government of placing further financial burdens on citizens.
