Article By : DIANA MOTSU

The Botswana Federation of Trade Unions (BFTU) has condemned what it describes as derogatory remarks made against the Basarwa community by Botswana Democratic Party member John Siele during a political rally that took place  at the Gaborone Bus Rank yesterday.

BFTU Secretary General Tshepiso Mbereki told Gabz FM News that Siele’s statements were intended to ridicule and embarrass the Basarwa people and are unacceptable. The union called on civil society, Basarwa representatives, and the BDP to condemn the remarks, and urged the party to discipline Siele and ensure a public retraction and apology.

In response, the BDP issued a public apology, citing regret for the offensive tribal remarks. In a communique , the party outlined that the member has offered an unreserved apology to Assistant Minister and Charleshill Constituency MP Motsamai Motsamai, the Basarwa community, and the nation.

The statement  added that appropriate action would be taken against the member.
