BOTSWANA PRISONS STRAINED BY DELAYED EXECUTIONS.

Article By: Diana Motsu

The Botswana Prisons Service has linked worsening prison overcrowding to delays in executing inmates on death row.

According to Commissioner Anthony Mokento, 15 inmates are awaiting execution, five of whom have exhausted appeals over six months ago.

Mokento also revealed that the Maximum-Security Prison, built for 112 inmates, now holds 311, while the First Offenders Prison holds 334 against a capacity of 170.

Mokento further raised concern over special duty allowances, currently limited to senior officers involved in executions.

He said junior officers, who handle high risk inmates daily are frustrated by the exclusion.
