A standoff between government and the Botswana Doctors Union over emergency call-time compensation is disrupting services in major public hospitals.
Health Minister Dr. Stephen Modise confirmed that while most doctors are reporting for duty, some have withdrawn from emergency rosters at Princess Marina and Nyangabgwe hospitals.
He however said the situation remains under control and praised private doctors who’ve volunteered to help.
In response, the Botswana Doctors Union has accused the Minister of downplaying the crisis, saying the situation is worsening.
BDU President Dr. Kefilwe Selema insists they’re not on strike but will pursue legal action for unpaid dues and fair working conditions.
Deputy Manager for Employee Relations in the Ministry of Health Thapelo koketso however says negotiations will soon resume under the revived Public Service Bargaining Council.
