CYCLES OF PAIN—UNDERSTANDING ADDICTION THROUGH GENERATIONAL TRAUMA

Article By: Phenyo Babusi

Recovery experts say addiction is often rooted in generational trauma, challenging the widespread belief that it stems from weak will or poor choices.

In an exclusive interview with Gabz FM News, Boyson Boipelo Mokone, founder and chairman of Hope Safe Haven Organization, explained that substance use is frequently passed down through families—not just genetically, but through learned behavior.

Children raised in households affected by alcoholism, neglect, or violence often adopt similar coping mechanisms, turning to substances as a way to deal with pain they don’t fully understand.

Mokone further emphasizes that breaking these patterns requires more than rehab or willpower It demands confronting family history and investing in collective healing.
