Recent statistics reveal a troubling increase in date rape incidents in Maun, with at least four cases reported each week.
A social worker at Women Against Rape Baleseng James, shared that the majority of date rape cases go unreported often due to fear, shame and a lack of trust in the legal system.
He emphasized that many individuals do not fully understand the concept of consent, particularly in social settings involving alcohol.
James also pointed out the dangerous culture of silence surrounding sexual violence, combined with insufficient education on consent, which allows such crimes to persist.
He urged victims of rape to seek professional counseling to cope with the emotional trauma, which often has devastating effects on families.
Maun Station Commander, Superintendent Joseph Lepodise, supported these concerns, stating that date rape remains underreported due to the stigma attached. He stressed the importance of educating the public about the necessity of clear, ongoing consent in all situations.
In his call for action, Superintendent Lepodise highlighted the urgent need for community-led initiatives to promote healthy behaviors and respect for personal boundaries in order to curb the rising number of rape incidents.
