Breast cancer remains a major health concern for women across Africa, with health experts urging greater focus on early detection to improve outcomes.
Speaking to Gabz FM News at the Roche Africa Press Day in Cape Town, Specialist Clinical Oncologist at the University of Stellenbosch Dr. Tselane Thebe, stressed the importance of recognizing early warning signs and seeking prompt medical attention. Dr. Thebe dispelled the myth that breast cancer is always painful, explaining that it’s possible to have breast cancer without experiencing any pain or noticeable symptoms.
She also highlighted the barriers that African women face in accessing proper cancer care, such as limited awareness, inadequate healthcare services, and the cultural stigma surrounding the disease. Dr Thebe stipulated that these factors often lead to delayed diagnoses, particularly in rural areas where healthcare services are sporadic, making treatment less effective.
She also emphasized the critical need for increased collaboration between healthcare providers, traditional leaders, and community organizations to overcome these obstacles.
