Former BCL mine workers will be compensated through an 18 month soft landing payment, covering the period from the mine’s closure in 2016, in line with government’s earlier promise.

This was said by the Minister for State President, Defence and Security, Moeti Mohwasa, during a consultation meeting with former employees and stakeholders recently .

Minister Mohwasa said government acknowledged that some commitments made at the time of the mine’s liquidation were not fulfilled, a situation that negatively affected the welfare and livelihoods of former workers.

He clarified that the 18 month soft landing payment will apply only to employees retrenched under the 2016 liquidation, and said a task force has been assigned to finalise the modalities of compensation.

The Minister added that government is considering the establishment of a Liquidation Protection Fund to protect workers and other stakeholders from the effects of future mine closures.
