GOVERNMENT DISMISSES CLAIMS OF COMPLETELY BANNING CEMENT IMPORTATION

Article By: Diana Motsu The government has dismissed allegations that they have decided to completely ban the importation of cement. Instead, they have prohibited the importation of cement in packages weighing less than 1000 kilograms.

This was announced by Minister of Trade and Industry, Mmusi Kgafela, in an interview with Gabz FM News. Kgafela stated that this new regulation is part of a broader strategy to promote value chain development within the country.

He emphasized that the restriction aims to ensure that cement imported into Botswana contributes more significantly to the local economy.

The Minister noted that by banning smaller packages, which often come pre-packaged from abroad, the government seeks to create opportunities for local industries to engage in packaging and other related activities, thereby generating jobs and fostering economic growth.
