The government has resolved to buy 1000 houses put up for sale by the BCL mine liquidator in order to avoid mass eviction of former BCL mine employees from the houses.
Vice president Slumber Tsogwane revealed this in a televised national address yesterday.
The liquidator had given the occupants of the houses until Saturday to have vacated or face legal action.
Tsogwane said the move would allow former miners more time to purchase the houses or move out at a later stage.
He noted that government will ultimately sell the houses if the current occupants fail to purchase them.
20 former BCL miners have expressed interest to buy the houses however only two have managed to make the financial commitment.
Meanwhile, MP for Selebi Phikwe Dithapelo Keorapetse welcomed development and called for a written commitment from the government.
