GOVT TO REVIEW COMPENSATION ACT, BOOST WORKER PROTECTION.

Article By: Diana Motsu

Government plans to revise the Compensation Act and set up a Workman Retirement Compensation Fund to ensure timely and fair support for injured workers.

Minister of Labour & Home Affairs Pius Mokgware announced the move at the World Day for Safety and Health at Work in Letlhakane, citing under reported workplace accidents and delays in compensation.

He urged companies to adopt safety policies and include unions in inspections.

Mokgware also revealed that a new labour bill and OSH policy will be tabled in Parliament this July.

The Worker’s Compensation Act, enacted in 1998, mandates that employers provide compensation for employees injured or contracting occupational diseases during employment. However, it currently does not apply to government employees.
