Former President Ian Khama has suffered a legal setback in his ongoing battle against firearm-related charges, with the High Court denying his request to stay his prosecution and declaring him a fugitive of justice.
Khama faces charges of illegally possessing firearms, receiving stolen property, and manipulating firearm registration processes. He challenged the legality of the charges and sought to halt the legal proceedings led by the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
High Court Judge Barnabas Nyamadzabo today ruled against Khama, denying his request for a stay. The judge further declared Khama a fugitive of justice due to his absence from the country. Khama maintains that he fled Botswana in November 2021 fearing for his life and denies the legitimacy of the charges against him. Judge Nyamadzabo, however, dismissed this claim.
