Article By: Tumelo Mouwane Lawyers representing Lesedi Molapisi, a Motswana woman sentenced to death in Bangladesh for drug possession, have successfully lodged an appeal against her sentence.
Botswana's High Commissioner to India, Gilbert Mangole, confirmed that his visit to Bangladesh ensured the appeal was filed with the court before the appeal period elapsed.
President Mokgweetsi Masisi had previously assured that the government would finance the appeal process and work alongside Amnesty International to support the effort.
Molapisi was arrested in January 2022 for drug trafficking after being found in possession of over 3.145 kilograms of heroin while on a Qatar Airways flight from South Africa via Doha.
Her father, Goitsemodimo Molapisi, stated that the family has not spoken to her since her arrest.
