Lobatse is experiencing a surge in gang activity, with groups such as Ma/Ukraine, Makgaola 7, and Mashebesheta linked to rising crime, including theft and harassment of elderly residents.
Member of Parliament for Lobatse, Kamal Jacobs attributes the growing gang culture to poverty and limited educational opportunities, forcing many young people, some as young as 12, to turn to gangs for survival.
Jacobs told Gabz FM News that basic necessities like food and schooling remain out of reach for many, pushing them into crime.
He also warned that the Ma/Ukraine gang is allegedly involved in drug dealing, further worsening the town’s crime rate.
He called for urgent community intervention and more programs to help young people escape the cycle of gang violence.
