Maun is experiencing a concerning rise in malaria cases, with 168 reported so far—117 of them involving men.
Speaking to Gabz FM, Northwest District Health Coordinator Dr. Sandra Maripe linked the surge to the community’s rejection of Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS) and the improper use of government-issued mosquito nets. This year, only 59% of the target households received IRS, falling short of the government’s 85% goal.
Dr. Maripe emphasized that IRS is key to reducing mosquito populations and preventing malaria. She urged residents to allow spraying in their homes, saying it’s a simple but powerful step in controlling the disease.
Despite free mosquito nets being provided, many are reportedly not using them correctly undermining their effectiveness.
Local resident Kabelo Damba voiced concerns about the discomfort of sleeping under nets and instead encouraged the use of repellents and other preventive methods.
Health authorities continue to advise the public to seek medical attention if symptoms arise, and to keep their homes clean and windows closed, especially in the evenings.
